Tensions were high in studio today as Artie got backlash for his admission yesterday of lying. I had some time on the train this morning so I decided to type up a little of what I heard this morning.
Artie told Howard and Robin that they were both mad at him, which they both denied. Robin said she was sad, not mad. It sounded so fake at first listen. Not that I can blame them both, since they are talking to someone they possibly couldn’t trust anymore.
Howard played a clip of Brad Garrett in studio from this past September in which he flat out told Artie that he was lying about seeing a therapist. In the clip, Brad asks Artie if he is in therapy and within 20 seconds of Artie’s response Brad interrupts him, “No you just lied, no you just lied. He doesn’t go anymore”. Of course Artie made jokes and insisted that he was going two days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. After the clip ended Artie said that at that point he was still going to therapy. Robin said that he wasn’t because yesterday he admitted he only went 1 and a half times to therapy.
Artie went after Robin pointing out that “she is an expert on everything”. Obviously there is some resentment on behalf of Artie on how Robin treats him. Robin went on the defense by getting all loud and fast.
A bit later Howard brought up the wrap-up show topic again and Artie started making jokes about Gary. “I have an issue with Gary… I think Gary is slowly starting to dislike me… He is hostile towards me lately”. Artie went into some theory that I couldn’t follow. Gary came in and said that he thought that Artie secretly disliked him. Artie said no. Gary traced his theory back to when Artie saw Gary’s paycheck (which was revealed and discussed later). Artie told Gary that he cares about what he thinks and considers him a friend.
Artie: “I couldn’t believe that everyone cared so specifically about the therapy thing”
Gary: “But do you know it’s not about the therapy thing, it’s because you lied and betrayed everyone”
Artie: “I betrayed you? How is your life affected in a negative way by me lying to you about therapy?”
Howard said that Artie didn’t betray him. Robin agreed with Gary saying that it is a betrayal. Artie responded by saying that
Gary: “What can I ever believe that you will ever say again…you’ve lied so many times.”
Artie said that you have to look at the motive of why he is lying. He is to someone who is the producer of the show he works on. Gary said that Artie lies to everyone. Artie said it wasn’t true.
Artie: “I lie to people that would think negatively about what I’m doing as far as my career is concerned”.
Gary: “We are the only people you lie to… just the people in this room? I don’t believe that.”
Artie: “Mostly, yea.”
Artie claimed that his mother knew him well enough to know that he wasn’t in therapy and they discussed it on his birthday.
“Look I’m too honest is the fucking problem”, exclaimed Artie. “You people who I work with shouldn’t even know I have a heroin problem”.
Gary brought up the Sagat roast. Artie said that he doesn’t lie just to lie.
Gary: “I’m supposed to know what the lie is and what isn’t the lie?”
Artie: “What do you care about if I’m lying to you?” He continued later, “The only thing I lie to you about is when its something that might affect my work”. Later he said, “99% of my life I don’t lie to anybody”.
Commentary: It’s interesting to hear Artie talk about the show as if they are just co-workers and not his friends. It’s also funny to hear him use work as an excuse for lying. If he cared so much about it, maybe he wouldn’t sleep at work. Or maybe he would be more honest to them behind the scenes so it didn’t become an issue. I haven’t heard much past this part in the show yet but it seems we are going down a path that might not be so easily rectified, if ever.
The soap opera continues…
